Meet Me in the Garden

A recital of music by women composers

About this Recital

This summer I had the good fortune to spend some beautiful summer nights sitting outside in the South of France. Many times, the "Fêtes galantes" poems of Verlaine came to my mind which I had learned long ago in their settings by Debussy and Fauré. The poems themselves are based on Watteau’s dreamlike scenes of nobles and performers mingling under the moonlight in lush, idyllic gardens.

As I revisited these poems, I found that the composers I had learned in school were not the only ones who had been inspired by them. Many of the very same poems had been exquisitely set by women musicians. And so I began a wonderful journey through repertoire by great composers of song who happen to be women, following themes of the enjoyment of life, the inspiration of nature and the wonder of the night.

This recital is a reflection of my own moment of contentment, sitting in a garden on a summer night. I invite you to meet me in there and hope that you find relaxation, beauty and enjoyment in this hour of music.

Works will include songs by Pauline Viardot, Cécile Chaminade, Lili Boulanger, Nadia Boulanger, Poldowski, Liza Lehmann, Margaret Bonds and Gwyneth Walker.
