About this project: Fun-a-Day is a simple challenge every January to pick a creative project and do it each day. Usually there’s a gallery show at the end of the month, but in this pandemic year that’s not happening. I have loved watching a friend do this for the last few years, but have never been able to pin down a specific thing I could commit making every day for 31 days straight.

This year I've got it. One of the things I have missed most in the past nine months is going to the fabulous dress up parties my circle of friends is particularly good at throwing. Some have concepts and require clever costumes. Some just require glamour.

With that in mind, my project theme is: "All Dressed Up, Noplace to Go." The medium will be self portraits of me not going to events - but dressing up anyway. Maybe I'll come up with 31 looks. Maybe I'll quit on Thursday. Who knows?

With apologies to Cindy Sherman and the countless semi-professional selfie-artists already on Instagram.

A note: I had intended this project to be something fun that sustained me through what promised to be a long, cold, isolated month. The events of Wednesday, January 6th made doing this seem all the more absurd and drained me of extra energy to put into it. After a couple days reflection, I've decided the escapism is rewarding and maybe we crave some variety in the images we're taking in. It's almost intentionally tone deaf at this point. I'll forge ahead for now and take breaks when that feels right. I hope you're able to find a creative outlet or practice that motivates and nourishes you in your own way. xo

Jan 23rd:

Another Saturday night sitting around waiting for the opera world to restart.

Jan 20th:

Democracy is a fragile and precious thing. May we handle it with care.

“When day comes we step out of the shade

aflame and unafraid.

The dawn blooms as we free it.

For there is always light if only we’re brave enough to see it,

if only we’re brave enough to be it.”

- Amanda Gorman

Jan 18th:

Waning light. Golden glow.

Jan 17th:

Holly Golightly sometimes got the mean reds. Some people get the winter blues. I guess I’m somewhere in the global trauma teals.

Jan 15th:

Is Friday Friday with nowhere to go for happy hour? Is New York New York with no nightlife? This dress demanded to be worn out of my apartment so I took it out to the fire escape.

Jan 14th:

Current events got me like …

Jan 11th:

How I dressed when I went to goth/industrial dance parties in 90s: Vamp lipstick, lots of eyeliner, black jeans, black tank top, black high-heeled boots.

How I imagined myself dressing: all that but replace the jeans with a mountain of tulle.

Man, it felt great to go back into this world today. Goth people were and are some of the best people I've ever known. And, oh, the soundtrack!

Jan 10th:

Equal parts Aquarius mythology and Vermeer's milkmaid.

Jan 9th:

Ah! la charmante chose

Quitter un pays morose

Pour Paris

Paris joli

Qu'un jour dût créer l'Amour.

- Voyage à Paris, Guillaume Apollinaire

Please Lord, don't let my passport expire before I can get a true continental breakfast.

Jan 7th:

Wake me up on Inauguration Day.

Jan 4th:

I’ll slip into some merlot while you amuse me with stories of the places people used to go to drink wine together. Wine tastings, wine bars, wine caves, even!

Jan 2nd:

Careful peer review has shown that the formula for 2020 was somewhat... off. As a result we've spent some time in the lab tinkering with the chemical components for 2021.

This year we've added extra Purpose, Hope and Inspiration! Perhaps these will help improve outcomes and achieve better overall balance.

Jan 1st:

Happy New Year! Dressing up to toast via Zoom is not the same as smooching friends at midnight but I put on sequins anyway. Can’t wait to spend time around humans again! Miss y’all!
